Benefits of Calcium for kids

Growing kids need calcium every day! This essential mineral plays a huge role in building strong bones and teeth, as well as supporting many other bodily functions.

Calcium is one of the body’s most abundant minerals: it makes up around 1.5% of total body weight. Bones and teeth contain a whopping 99% of that calcium! And the more bone mass that kids develop in childhood, the less likely they are to have problems with bone density later in life.

Benefits of calcium

It supports strong bones

The first two decades of life are known as the “bone-forming” years, because this is when the skeleton grows in both size and density. Between the ages of five and 12, kids need to be getting the right amount of calcium in their diet to support the huge amount of growth they’re going through.

It helps with healthy teeth

Between the ages of six and 13 is when much of the mineralization of primary teeth occurs. Low intake of calcium during these years can have a major effect on tooth structure.

Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium and plays a key role in the maintenance of good oral health, so both should be taken in adequate amounts.

All of these things contribute to a child’s daily energy levels and long-term health.

How do kids get calcium?

Most kids in New Zealand get their daily calcium requirements from dairy products. However, those who are allergic to dairy - or who are just fussy eaters - may be missing out. Cow's milk is one of the most common causes of food allergy in kids, affecting about one in every 50 children.

There’s also calcium in leafy greens, shellfish, sardines, beans, dried fruit, tofu, and some fortified foods.

Unfortunately, many of the foods we eat today are no longer as mineral-rich as they used to be. This is due to a lack of minerals in our soil and modern processing techniques.

Childrens’ diets have also changed a lot in the last few decades. There’s a lot more processed food available, and it’s often lacking in real nutrients. The worst part is that much of these foods are targeted at kids!

As a parent, you’ll know it’s not always easy to convince your kids to eat the right foods every day. Sometimes, spinach just doesn’t look as delicious as ice cream!

That's why we added Calcium to Noughty.

Noughty fizzy drinks are a fun, low-sugar option made especially for kids. Kids love the taste and parents love the added nutrients! Noughty contains 30% (200mg) of the recommended daily intake for calcium along with 100% of the daily requirement of Vitamin D (which helps calcium absorption).

If your kids are getting plenty of calcium from their diet already - that’s great! But the extra 200mg boost from Noughty will help ensure that they’re topped up. After all, they have a lot of growing left to do.

That’s why Noughty is the smart choice for strong bones and minds!
